GNU
GNU（グニュー、グヌー）はUNIX互換のソフトウェア環境を全てフリーソフトウェアで実装するプロジェクト。FSFによって法的、経済的にサポートされている。
GNUという単語は「GNUはUNIXではない (GNU's Not UNIX)」というフレーズ中から太字中の文字を抜粋して並べた略称である。正式な発音は「グニュー」（であるが、稀に誤って「ヌー」と発音されることもある。おそらく、哺乳類のGnuがヌーと発音される事、そしてGNUのマスコットが牛である事などからの混同であると考えられる）。再帰的命名という一種の言葉遊び、文字遊び的意味合いが強いため、真相は不明である。一説にUNIXを逆から綴って、XINU → XI NU → GNUと変化させたものという説[要出典]もある。
